Your Learning Agenda

More and more Parents are presenting to General Practice with their children asking for a referral because they think their child has ADHD and/or autism.

Many parents say that they have realised that they may also be neurodiverse after reading up on the topic and being told that it can run in families. We are therefore making more referrals to the Adult ADHD and Autism services as well for formal diagnosis.

There are long waiting times for children and adults to get a diagnosis on the NHS.

So, what can we do to support our patients while they are waiting? To answer this question and others, I will be co-delivering this training session with Nora Young, a person with lived experience, ex-teacher and cofounder of Birmingham Resilience, Education and Well-being Services (BREWS CIC).

Together, we will cover the following Learning Outcomes:

  • What is neurodiversity? And what is it not? - dispelling myths
  • ADHD in detail: the three types, the role of dopamine, emotional regulation, RSD
  • Autism and the overlap
  • Neurodiverse families and the issues they face
  • The Neurodevelopmental pathway including which questionnaires to use
  • How General Practice can help support patients whilst waiting for the diagnosis to be made
  • How General Practice can support children and parents after the diagnosis has been made
  • Resources to support adults, children, parents and Health Professionals
