There is an incredible amount of new research and guidelines, changing the face of COPD care. This update will cover the current basics highlighting what is new, what has changed and what is especially relevant to those of us working in primary care. It will cover some typical (slightly more complex) clinical cases – and will emphasise key directions for care moving forward. A chance to feel up to date with the basics and more confident in the diagnosis and management of COPD, knowing you are up to date with the issues.

Dr Steve Holmes Steve has worked as a GP principal since 1989, initially on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border and since 2002, at The Park Medical Practice in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
He has a long-standing association with the Primary Care Respiratory Society, the British Thoracic Society and the Royal College of General Practitioners, as well as the International Primary Care Respiratory Society and Asthma and Lung UK.
Steve has been involved in medical education in a variety of guises, often at a national or regional level since 1991. He has been involved in a wide range of respiratory educational initiatives for generalists and specialists, both medical and nursing and has been involved in research work with more than eight universities.
He has taught nationally on quality improvement methods, leadership skills and communication skills training, for more than 20 years as well as his respiratory work.
He has published more than 300 articles, is a reviewer for more than 10 active peer reviewed journals and has had the opportunity to work at a global level.
Throughout this, he remains a clinician; passionate about the values of good primary care, continually developing the quality of clinical care, and providing holistic care for patients and their families from cradle to grave.
He is married with two adult inspirational daughters and a wife who inspired them. He manages to get time to enjoy family holidays, walking and running (up to half marathon distance), watching rugby when the opportunity allows and playing the guitar or piano badly!
Dr Rama Vancheeswaran Dr. Rama Vancheeswaran, Director of Research at West Herts NHS, Respiratory Consultant and General Physician is a highly experienced Physician practicing at both NHS and private hospitals in London and the wider Hertfordshire area and is an Honorary Consultant, Royal Brompton Hospital.
Dr. Vancheeswaran specializes in Respiratory Medicine with sub-specialties in Interstitial Lung Disease, Complex Airways Disease, and Ventilation. She led the COVID programme at West Herts with numerous publications on COVID triage, severity, ventilation, COVID monoclonal delivery and COVID treatment pathways. She had previously been a member of the BTS COPD SAG and remains a contributor to the National COPD and Asthma audits. She currently teaches medical students at Brunel University.
Dr. Vancheeswaran earned her initial medical qualifications in 1989 in Nigeria and then again in 1995 from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and further enhanced her expertise with a Master’s and PhD focused on the Immunopathogenesis of Scleroderma, she has received numerous awards for her innovative work in lung cancer and community health services, such as the NHS Innovations Award, HSJ award, and the BMJ Award twice in Cancer and Comprehensive COVID services (Barnets and West Herts Hospitals NHS).
Her notable contributions include leading the Integrated COPD service in Barnet, North London, which had been recognized for its low admission and mortality rates. She has also been instrumental in developing the North London Interstitial Lung Disease Pathway and setting up sleep services across Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals (Nursing In Practice 365). She has set up the ILD services in Barnet and now West Herts NHS teaching Trust. She has published widely across respiratory medicine and medical pathways. She remain a patron of the St Francis Hospice where she previously was a Trustee.
Dr. Vancheeswaran’s passions include continued service improvement, education, research, patient centred holistic care and is highly recommended by her peers for her thoroughness and excellent patient care. She is praised for being knowledgeable, pragmatic, and approachable, qualities that make her a preferred specialist in her field.
