Dr Stephen Longworth Dr Steve Longworth qualified in 1981 and was a full time GP in Leicester for 30 years, then a GP in Australia for seven years. He returned to the UK in 2021 and currently works as a GP locum. He was a GP Trainer, Appraiser, Undergraduate Tutor, and has been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Clinical Skills at St George’s University Medical School in The Caribbean.
He worked in the Shoulder and Spine Clinics of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Leicester General Hospital as a Specialist Doctor. He was the first GPwSI in Musculoskeletal Medicine in Leicester.
He has a Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine and diplomas in Musculoskeletal Medicine and Primary Care Rheumatology.
He is a Past President of The Primary Care Rheumatology Society and was a Tutor and Examiner for The Diploma in Primary Care Rheumatology at the University of Bath.
He is co-author of the bestselling book “Injection Techniques in Musculoskeletal Medicine: A Practical Manual for Clinicians in Primary and Secondary Care” which has also been translated into French, Greek and Chinese. The 5th edition was published in 2018.
He wrote the chapter on Chronic Back and Neck Pain for the RCGP’s textbook on Musculoskeletal Disorders in Primary Care (Curriculum Statement 15.9). He co-authored the chapter on clinical assessment in “The ABC of Spinal Disorders” from BMJ Books. He has written articles about musculoskeletal topics for Update, Prescriber, GP and others.
He has been a guest expert on Radio 4 medical programmes ˜Case Notes” and “Check Up” on the topics of back and shoulder pain.
Symposium Speaker Dr Catherine Fernando is a portfolio GP based in East Lothian. She is co-director of IYASU Healthcare, and specialises in the treatment of rashes, acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrhoeic dermatitis, melasma, and the diagnosis of moles.
Dr Fernando qualified from the University of Aberdeen in 2001. She is a member of the Royal College of General Practioners and the Royal College of Physicians. She has diploma in practical dermatology with distinction from Cardiff University, as well as diplomas in child health, sexual and reproductive health, and obstetrics & gynaecology. Dr Fernando has extensive experience in dermaotology, rheumatology and women’s health.
Outside of the practice, Dr Fernando participates in medical education nationally and is a tutor on the Edinburgh Regional GPST Training Programme. She is the founder and CEO of IYASU Vegan Medical Bags, a line of bags designed especially for female healthcare professionals.
